diesel in Port seat locker

I have discovered about a quarter of a gallon of diesel in the bottom of our port side seat locker. there are no signs of leakage from the fuel tank or any of the system with or without the engine running.
The boat is fitted with a standard pair of tanks aft of the Volvo md2b engine.
The tank was approximately 3/4 full but had been full at the beginning of the month.
I cannot find where the fuel tank vents are but cannot believe they lead into the boats interior but could this be an overflow when the boat Heels excessively? I was informed one extreme low spring tide she was nearly dried out and on her side when on her swinging mooring but cannot find which side she was on.
Any suggestions greatly received

Bet it was on that side!
No damage, I hope?

Ah! Glorious mud!

Having said that, I think my heads outlet valve is blocked with it :-(
