Hi, Had an accident and spilled some paint on the salon floor. Cleaned it and took some of the varnish off the floor. It now looks a mess. Anyone refurbished the floor? Any advice welcome. Paul

You should be able to revarnish the floor boards. My advice would be to strip all the varnish off, so you have an even colour of timber to work with. Be very careful sanding the veneer as I am not sure how thick it is, so look at a cut edge to check. Many modern veneers can be only 0.6mm, that is why I mentioned it.

You may find that you will need to do all the floorboards in that cabin, as they might not match. I am unsure what would be the best varnish to use, but a hard wearing polyurethane would be my choice (check hard wearing floor varnishes).

If they look really good revarnished, you might end up doing the other cabins.

I found the problem with rubbing down the floor boards also removes
the Yellow stripes ( for want of a better word )

How do you deal with re-newing the stripes

The stripes are holly veneer. It sound like you were too agressive with your sanding. Most decorative veneers are very thin, in the range of 0.6mm to 1.0mm only.

Your only solution to renew the stripes involves either
new plywood
covering the floor with an alternative surface like Dek-King synthetic teak or Flotex carpet
routing new grooves in the existing floor and letting in some new veneer
reveneering all the floors with teak and holly
or just live with it.

I had problems with the finish on the floor of my westerly renown and refinishing the wood floor was really not going to be a realistic answer.
I laid a great carpet floor using carpet tiles and with some spares you can replace ones that receive accidents etc. It means I can also get to the underfloor area and the keel bolts easily and quickly should the need arise. If you use this proposal, do use cheap thin carpet tiles as they are not really up to the job.

I have just finished fitting B&Q carpet tiles to the cabin floors on my Westerly Renown and it looks great.
I also have a Dufour 2800 and this carpet has been laid on her for several years. If you have a spillage or worn area, you can simply put in a replacement tile.
With the new floor just laid, I put a small button of silicone sealant in each corner. This holds all in place but should I need to get to the bilges, I can still do this quickly and easily.
Floor is easy to clean with dustpan and brush.
