The discussion lists
Has anyone in the WOA High Command thought about closing down the email based discussion lists and bring that 'trade' across to this BB? It may liven things up a bit here.
I reckon that those email based lists such as the yahoo ones are a little bit past their 'use by' date.
Just my two pesos worth..

Frank I couldnt agree more, however it seems the concensus of opinion is against changeFrank wrote:Has anyone in the WOA High Command thought about closing down the email based discussion lists and bring that 'trade' across to this BB? It may liven things up a bit here.

I think it is a "concensus of opinion against change" by a vociferous few.

It is a big shame that the "Emailers" can not see the benifit of this forum.
On here everything is in chronological order. Users don't have to "snip" messages making the thread unreadable, and the search function is first class.
Maybe rather than supporting the email discusson list replies should be made in the format of see the (URL Link) where a reply is put on this forum?

Yahoo WOA forum
I think the Yahoo forum is rubbish I just cannot get on with it all. Posts , threads are nearly always high jacked and go completly off message as mates discuss totally different subjects. Great for them but very frustrating if one is trying to solve a problem. This forum and the way it is set up is great it needs more promotion on WOA web site and for more members to use it.

And it also has a number major advantages:Stormy Monday wrote:The forum has a major flaw: it relies on users visiting it. The email discussion list has a considerably higher membership and enables delivery to the inbox, ensuring wide distribution and increasing the chance of a helpful reply.
1) Very easy to search and find older posts
2) The threads are very easy to follow from start to finish. (How many emails from the WOA are "snipped" and totally unreadable and unfathomable. Also the order they are read in is not alway correct)
3) You dont get bombarded with hundreds of irrelevant emails. You only read the threads which are relevant.
4) Offers of "performance enhancing tablets", "young ladies" etc are removed by the moderator so should not reach the general reader.
5) If there is a thread of interest you can ask to be emailed when people reply.
I do not doubt the emails were a good system 10 years ago, but the WOA has moved forward to the best solution, a forum.
Our webmaster has even chosen the best forum software. PHPBB is by far the most user friendly forum software, far easier to use than the software used by YBW.com
So why does "Stormy Monday" always post try the email lists. Stormy Monday, the future is here - use it!
All of course is my opinion and no malice is intended (in case any offence is taken)

In response to 1): Yahoogroups has implemented a vastly improved search utility and the email discussion list archives (a very rich resource) can be searched very easily.
Re 2), Some forum posts are made in inappropriate sections, making it difficult to find relevant posts.
In response to 4): They are very few in number; the problem arises when people respond!
With regard to 5): You receive an email telling you that there is a new post (only in respect of existing threads that you have flagged or to which you have responded - there is nothing to alert you to a new thread in which you might be interested or where you might be able to provide assistance). You then have to visit the forum to see what has been said. If you do this by clicking on the link, a browser window that you were using may be redirected to the forum, which can be a major inconvenience.
Emails can be checked by default for spelling and grammar prior sending; I see no such facility for forum posts.
If the forum is so much better than sliced bread, why do a vociferous minority of its users feel that the only way of achieving critical mass is to kill a system that has worked well for many years and continues to be the channel of choice for many users? The email discussion list archive is a rich resource that would be lost to all if the discussion list were discontinued.

If you want to see what the forum could become then take a look at http://www.tt-forum.co.uk
15000 members - 300 - 500 regular users.

Hmmmmmm,
Well what can I tell you, I think this forum must have been given an anaesthetic!, not what you would call active is it?
The Yahoo Westerly Owners Group is very top heavy, / unwieldy and seems to be geared to folks with the more expensive / larger boats, that is one of the reasons I started the WesterlyNomadand22 group.
This forum hasn't managed to generate as much traffic in the same couple of months that our WesterlyNomadand22 group has. It has no file storage, it has no photo storage, it has no links storage.
I posted a hello message on the 1st November 2006, and not one member of this forum has since offered the trivial courtesy of a hello and welcome aboard back!??
With reference to the Westerly-Owners Yahoo Egroup. If you don't want your inboxes flooded with emails that don't interest you, you can always do what I did, just go no email, and visit the website and select what you want to read from there, it aint rocket science.
Hey, I will give this forum a wee while longer, see if anybody wakes up from their slumbers, but if not, I will just vote with me feet.
Cheers all, Charlie.

Charlie,
stay with us! You only have to read further up this thread to see the reason why we can't get underway properly - the discussion list and opponents to this BB.
We are getting more registrations slowly, and like you, I am not an advocate of the discussion list with its banter and disjointed posts. Most days it is Control A, and Control/Shift C, or Ctrl A, Del.
I am on here most days, and so far, have not had to delete one post that is sailing oriented. I have deleted this is a porn post - admin aware and video posts though, and will continue to do so - an ongoing problem.
One way to try to get an answer, is to just put a link in the body to your post onto the discussion list, with the boat type as the subject. It may get an answer here.
