News about plans for new WOA web site and discussion group

Post by dj7613 » Wed Mar 21, 2018 9:46 am

WOA is working on a new web site which will use the latest web software technology and will include a new Discussion Group with a hash tag search facility and facilities to post images and videos. The new site will cater for social and technical posts in linked but separate Groups with a common log on for the WOA site, discussion group and shop. We envisage that the new site will take over from all of:
i)this existing Forum,
ii)the Yahoo Discussion Group
iii)the Westerly Owners Facebook site.
The new site will have the ease of posting features of Facebook but it will not be linked to Facebook in any way so your data will be safe. We anticipate that the new site will go live around end of June and we will invite Westerly Forum and Yahoo Discussion Group Users to try it. We hope that having a single site will concentrate and encourage technical exchange and social traffic.
We plan to develop the Wiki as a long term repository for information originally posted on the discussion groups and we would welcome assistance from users to harvest useful technical data from the discussion groups to be posted on the Wiki.

Hope you are nearly ready for the new season,
ATB

The new site looks great. I am glad it won't have a direct connection to Facebook given the dreadful revelations about data breaches and the subsequent apparent miss-use of that information by Cambridge Analytica. Is someone making sure that the new site complies with GDPR?

Ditto.
I dislike using Facebook compounded by the irony that, despite them retaining all the information ever input, you can never find anything which severely restricts it's value as a forum.

The old site is not terribly intuitive, so looking forward to the new one.

I haven't seen the new site but keep up the good work!
Many thanks

The new web site is very different from the current one. I have been playing around with it and making suggestions to make it more usable and easy to locate information. The 2 biggest improvements in my opinion are loading photographs for all to see and the boats for sale now allows plenty of text and colour photographs.

Hoping everything can be made fully working for its launch to you all at the end of June.

I have been assisting with the testing too, for the last couple of months. I must say Nigel Birch has done a massive amount of work and produced an excellent website. The new forum or Comunity is completely different, with an appearance more like Facebook, but is hosted entirely on the website, so removing all the privacy worries of Facebook. There will no doubt be teething problems as people get used to it. It will rely heavily on #hashtags instead of titles and subjects. Careful use of #hashtags in posts will make searching easy. Currently we have been using two main Groups, "Technical Chat" and "General Chat," but it also has the ability to use Groups for local groups or special events.
GDPR has also been mentioned and compliance is being checked.
