Rudder straightening

My centaur has a very bent rudder probably due to it being in mud when another boat hit it. Yet to be proven! Has anybody ever straightened a rudder as trafalgar quote £1500 for replacement. Are there any other suppliers or does anyone know of a second hand rudder to be had?Image

Have you considered a claim on your insurance? Then you do not need an answer to your question as they would appoint a surveyor and a repairer.

Looks terminal. Get a new rudder.

Looking at the photograph, I think it is bent beyond repair. However you could still use part it. The rudder could be split open to save the halves of the blade. Then have new metal work made and reassemble. Would certainly cost a lot less than £1500.

Agree all the foregoing. One word of advice: Dont be persuaded to try cold or even warm straightening. It doesnt work. The resulting work-hardening causes very rapid failure once under stress. You may find a fitter/turner workshop to make a new shaft, but you will have to split out the old shaft and tangs. You may save a bit.

Hi,

I fully agree with the rest, I am afraid it's a new rudder. A local boat in the Isle of Wight had the same problem(Pentland) and the local yard in Bembridge tried to straightened it and failed!! They have a excellent engineer and workshop facilities as well. The owners ended up paying for a new one.

Not good news...Sorry
