Hello and port light hinges!

Post by Discus101 »

Hello every body
I am new to the forum
I have broken a hinge on the port light in the heads on my discus. I have spoken to a company regarding 3D printing, obviously this was going to be possible albeit with a large price tag. However I then looked at this forum and found that someone had made various marks of the hinge.
Can anyone please put me in touch with the person who made the hinge as I would be very interested in getting my hands on a few! I gather the mk3 or 4 was successful.
Many thanks

Welcome to the WOA Forum.

Have a word with Steve (TyroSailor) as he is currently testing the latest version and he can put you in touch with the person make them.

Steve (TyroSailor) does have short periods when he cannot access the forum, but he will reply probably to this thread.

I've replied to your email, John. Roger's right - Hillary made them for me. The resin is pretty expensive....

Hi John,

I have replied to you by email. Sorry for the delay I am in the USA quite a bit this month so its a bit difficult to keep track of personal email. But I should be able to help if you don't mind waiting until early in May.

regards,

Hi John,

I am back from the USA and I have just ordered another tank of Tough Resin. So I am ready to start your hinges. Drop me an email to conform the number of pairs and I will get started. Incidentally I have just found something else I can print. My outhaul Traveller car for the in-mast reefing was old and worn and jamming. So the rigger supplied a new Harken Small Boat Car and two metre's of System A track but the end stops were little flimsy push in plastic things that would not stop a car flying down the rail at the behest of a flapping mainsail. The old track had a big nylon stop and an 8mm bolt through it at the mast-end of the track. Anyway I printed new end-stops in Tough resin that will bolt to the track and boom. They look really neat and i am very pleased with them. I hope I am still saying that in a force 9 on a lee shore!

...let us fervently hope that neither you nor any of us ever find ourselves in that desperate situation!

Did we decide that Tough Resin was the stuff to use for the hinges? Those in use are the Mark II version and I thought they were made of something else. Or maybe not.

Is the weather down there as bad as was forecast?

Hi Steve,

After further experimentation Tough seems fine as long as its given a really good long hard blast of UV light. I now have a new light box which cures things better. Also Formlabs are on Version 5 of the Tough resin which again means its harder. I am happy to make you some more in the newer resin should the ones you've got prove troublesome but I think they will be fine.

As for the weather its been bitterly cold with a strong wind. Even simply working on the boat is very unpleasant. However Thursday through the Bank holiday weekend is forecast to be sunny. So I am fitting that outhaul car and track tomorrow along with other repairs and I am aiming to be sailing on Thursday or Friday
