I am trying to find out if there's an effective way to remove layers of epoxy paint from below the waterline without damaging the gelcoat. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Jonathan

Why do you want to remove an epoxy coating? The main purpose of epoxy is to stop water from penetrating the gel coat and entering the glassfibre.

Maybe you mean antifouling, not epoxy, which is a regular question. Once back to a gel coat you can then apply epoxy. The best way to remove antifouling is use a scraper. Alternatively yYou can employ someone to mechaniclly soda blast the hull. Do not dry sand antifouling with an orbital sander as it is very messy and antisocial to other boat owners.

We had the bottom soda blasted this winter which is absolutely non damaging and leaves the gelcoat looking as if it has been sanded with 60 grit sandpaper.
