My Regatta 290 has a brand new (well, now two years old) Volvo D1-20F engine and saildrive which has been dealer serviced over the winter and runs sweet as a nut with only 70 hours from new. Twice now the engine overheat has sounded and after stopping the engine and re-starting, all is well. The raw-water filter is clear. I suspect on each occasion I have picked up weed or plastic debris on the saildrive intake but as it has happened twice now in two weeks is making me wonder if there is something else to look for?
It could be plastic or weed blocking the intake which falls away and clears when the vacuum effect from the engine water pump impeller stops. I had my intake block five times in less than 1/4 mile due to very high levels of weed in the harbour. However I always keep a close eye on the amount of exhaust water being ejected. So see if you are getting a good flow of cooling water from the exhaust. If you are its probably ok.
