leaking stern gland

Post by Hardover » Thu Apr 19, 2018 6:13 am

Paka'a is fitted with a stern gland and greaser. The gland is spurting water and continues to do so even after turning the handle of the greaser. Thing must be split/perished. Are they easy to remove and replace and can it be done in the water or do I need to dry her out?

You may be able to tighten up the stern gland. There is packing material inside that probably needs replacing, but worth trying to adjust the gland. You should find a lock nut that needs to be undone first and then if there is any adjustment left you should be able to turn the end of the gland. You will probably need a C spanner for the nut and gland. If you can adjust it, you should wind it up so you get an occasional drip when running to keep it lubricated and cool. No problem doing that afloat, but to change the gland, ideally you need to be out of the water, otherwise you are going to get a lot of water in.
