Storm propeller

Hi everybody,
I need a new prop for my Storm. The current one, which now has a piece missing, is a two-bladed fixed one.
It's not entirely clear but it seems to have 18 x 15 LH stamped on it. I'm assuming that's 18" diameter (Obviously I can measure that) and 15" pitch, and Left Handed.
Does this sound right?
I still have the original Volvo 2002 engine with a shaft drive, and I get the 3200 rpm as noted in the manual.

I contacted T.Norrie and talked to them when I went for a new prop for my Konsort. They asked the questions and came up with the answer from their previous experience. I also got a replacement shaft as they could the get the taper right and I was asked about the drive connection so they could machine the correct fitting on the shaft. Very happy with the result.

Welcome to the Westerly Owners Forum.

If you are fitting a new propeller, why not consider fitting a folding propeller as your boat speed will increase by ½ to ¾ knots.

On my Fulmar I fitted a Gori from Sillete. http://www.sillette.co.uk/gori_standard ... llers.html

Also consider a Flexofold from Darglow. http://www.darglow.co.uk/Propellers/Flex-O-Fold/

Hello, I have just recently bought a Westerly Falcon which has a Kiwi folding propeller fitted. The propeller was fitted before my ownership but with Volvo 2003 series engine. I have not had the boat long enough to list the advantages along with the fact my propeller needs a good service!! As well as the obvious advantage of less drag the one advantage I can attest to is the ability to change the pitch. The previous owner of my boat upgraded the engine quite recently, however since taking ownership I have discovered I am not get the thrust I should and reckon the pitch is incorrect on the propeller, with any other prop this would mean a new propeller but with the kiwi prop its looks like a pretty simple adjustment when I lift her out for the winter. I would see this as an advantage with an older engine as will save cost when/if a re-engine occurs in the future. Hope it helps.

Sillette don't appear to do a LH 18x15, though they might if I ask them I suppose.

Thanks all for your replies. I'm a little strapped for cash, so I may well buy another fixed prop, the advantages of a folding one notwithstanding. I'm happy with the performance of the current one.

When I was doing some research on the ideal propeller for a Sealord, I was recommended an 18" x 13" or a 17" x 14" for the 36 hp engine.

I think 18" x 15" is oversized for the type of engine. Or is it a very low revving engine?

Sounds a bit big. Are you sure it's not 18x13? I replaced mine with a 17x14" 3 bladed folding prop from Bruntons, which I was told was slightly overpitched "to help fuel economy". Works well though max rpm is around 2750. That's with a 3:1 gearbox ratio.
Any decent propeller manufacturer should have a database and be able to recommend a size for you. You can find out the gearbox ratio from the gearbox serial number.

Thanks all for your help. My apologies for the delay in replying. I've checked with Bruntons and T. Norris both of whom were very helpful. 18x15 LH is indeed the correct prop for a Storm with the Volvo Penta 2002 18hp. Ours is fitted with a 3:1 ratio gearbox, which makes all the difference, apparently, giving us max revs of 3200, as is stated in the Volvo manual. I have a new fixed two-bladed prop on order from T. Norris at £285 + vat.
The prop broke because it was badly de-zincified. The previous owner had neglected to fit a shaft anode, probably for several years. I fitted one as soon as I bought the boat, but the damage had already been done. The extra vibration has knocked the engine out of alignment. I'm going to have new engine mountings fitted at the same time.
