Marine Surveyor Recommendations?

Good morning,

Having hauled my Warwick out for the winter months it would appear that I need to have the keels dropped and strengthening bridges put in.

My Warwick is probably circa 1970 so I knew that this day would come and some cracks that I have identified this week suggest that the day has now arrived!

I have been given one name for a marine surveyor but I was wondering if anyone had any other recommendations.

I am intending for a boatyard to do the work and whilst it appears quite clear what needs doing I am presuming they will want a surveyors assessment prior to doing any work?

And if anyone has personal experience of any boatyards (and an idea of prices to be expected etc) where they have had such work undertaken I would be interested to hear of their experiences.

I have used Mike Horwood (BSc Phd MIMarsEST MIET CMarEng CEng !!!!) of Alpha Yacht Surveys (www.alphamarine.co.uk) for the purchase of 2 boats now. His work is thorough and his reports likewise. When I purchased my first boat the broker said his was the best survey report he had seen and took his details. He is based in Topsham but will travel. He is a member of my yacht club - I will get no commission but you can use my name if you wish!

I used Nick Vass for my purchase survey on the basis that he has good knowledge of the Westerly range. I was very pleased and he has subsequently provided nuggets of pertinent Westerly focussed advice.

This is the chap I used when I bought Tyro. He seemed very thorough and competent, although I didn't think much of his spelling/grammar/typing! He also seems to know Westerlies well.

He does tend to be very busy with commercial work so is not always interested in us "leisure sailors". I had a pre purchase survey done by Gerry Ridge last year and would happily use him again. He is based in Pwllheli, North Wales.

Than you for the replies re the marine surveyors.

I was interested to hear of any experiences that people have had with the dropping of keels and strengthening of the hull internally and externally and then keels re-seated. Whether it works well? What to look out for?

Possibly not an experience people want to recount which I understand.
