Westerly Conway/Medway cradle dimensions

Post by cossie »

Hi
I have just purchased a Westerly Medway and am having it transported home by truck. I need to make up a cradle and was wondering if anyone has dimensions of same. ie no. of support points, dimensions of base, height of supports above ground, position of the support pads. I would prefer to make it up with support legs vertical with no angle adjust but am not sure of separation/width between supports on each side. I have had a search through forum but cannot see anything.

Thanks
Niall

Welcome to the WOA Forum.

You might be wise to use a boat moving company, rather than a general transport company with a lorry. A boat moving company will have adjustable supports, so a cradle would not be necessary for moving your boat. For a keen price try www.shipley.co.uk to find an empty return load.

I can remember my father helping load a 34ft yacht he sold at the end of the 1960's for transport from Kent to Scotland. The problem we had was the height of the boat on the low loader. We had to remove the pulpit to ensure it would clear all bridges on the route.

If the boat is going to be launched immediately, then you do not need a cradle. If you use a yard for winter storage, then they normally will only use their own cradles. However, if it will be a club yard then you may need your own cradle. Then I would purchase one of the commercially available ones (see back pages of Practical Boat Owner or Yachting Monthly).

Trafalgar Yacht Services hold many Westerly records and may be able to advise. https://www.westerly-yachts.co.uk/ They are also a useful source for Westerly spare parts.

The final source of assistance would be the designers, Laurent Giles. https://laurentgiles.co.uk/ They should hold information of where and how many supports would be required for a cradle for a Medway.

Thanks Roger
I will be visiting the boat next week and i think i can take some measurements from inside the hull at the waterline and that should be enough.
