We didn't have much time for socialising. By the time I has replaced the anode, rinsed the hull with fresh water and gone to do the distillery tour, I was pushed to slap on some extra antifoul. Now I know that you are local I will let you know when we are up your way.

Ref...... applying a coat of epoxy. If you want to apply epoxy as a preventive (anti osmosis etc) barrier then just 'slapping on a coat' won't achieve that. For epoxy coatings to work the boat has to be really quite dry. A moisture meter must be used to check how she is drying out (whether you are doing it by natural air drying or by using a tent and heaters etc). The readings must be quite low before its even worth considering.
A light soda blasting (but not gelcoat stripping) is now commonly used to remove earlier paints and to etch the gel coat and open any voids or faults which may have trapped moisture. During the drying out the hull has to be pressure washed regularly, or even steam cleaned if thats available. Thats because many solutes and salts come to the surface and unless these are washed off the boat wont dry out. It will just reach a plateau figure and stay at that. It is possible to dry out naturally but it takes quite a while, at the very least the whole winter layup and into the late spring, with regular pressure washing. Boat should be emptied of as much stuff as possible and well vented inside. To do it quicker you will need tenting, heating, etc. Many people now use heated moisture extraction pads which can be hired together with a pump.
Just putting a coat of epoxy on a damp boat will achieve nothing and will trap in any moisture preventing her from drying out on any future layups. Basically if you don't want to do the full job, then you are better off just filling and repairing, then priming and painting. If there are no obvious defects then stick with the basics and save your money until you really need to do a good job.

Good advice Mike. I took the opportunity to epoxy coat because the boat was out of the water for 18 months before I bought it ,and after soda blasting ,with the moisture readings very low I decided to go ahead with epoxy. Even then with a controlled heat and humidity environment its tricky to apply correctly.

I believe the blisters are usually between the two layers of gelcoat and doesn't go into the laminate on Westerlys. This makes popping and filling the more sensible option.

In my case the hull has been epoxied previously (gel shield 200) a good few years worth of antifouling has now been scraped off down to the gelshield, my plan was to apply a further epoxy coat over the gelshield as its been scratched in a good few places by over enthusiastic scraping ! Moisture readings are very low at the moment and would like them to stay that way.

You will still need to sand the whole of the exisiting epoxy coating to get a good key for the new coat to be able to adhere well. Any areas that have been scratched through should have several coats applied to build up the epoxy thickness again. As mentioned before, do read the instructions carefully and note the temperature guidelines apply to the minimum nightime temperature, not the daytime reading. So you will have to leave this until April unless you use heat.

Thanks Roger, I have already sanded the gelshield with a DA sander and it has a really good key, I will be a while before we get a suitable temp to apply the epoxy.
Interestingly I have contacted the paint manufacturer ( in this case Jotuns) they have advised against overcoating with antifouling until totally cured then to lightly abrade the surface prior to AF.
My previous experience with epoxy was to overcoat before total curing, but i guess they should know ?

According to International, the A/F should be applied 5 hours (at 15deg C) after last coat of Gelshield 200 - at least, that is the way I read it.

Well that's it...........................Christmas is all over, back to "work" today on Isabella, finishing off the windlass wiring, mounting the breaker and crimping on battery terminals, even got to test run it. :D Despite being indoors, I was glad to be able to run the Eberspacher for an hour. Need to get the new switch panels connected this week, along with some new saloon lights.

Today I removed the genoa after working out what caused it to jam. Took both sails ashore to flake them to reduce their volume. Then washed the decks ready to be lifted out tomorrow.

Today Concerto was lifted out.

The Micron 2 has performed brilliantly as there was no weed even though she had not been scrubbed since launching at the end of April. This is partly due to the marina basin in Chatham being known as a low growth area. The yard boss said from his experience that the Dover white performs best of all the Micron colours, probably due to a higher copper content. So it may be worth you considering this for next year for your own boat.

Now the planning of work starts, depending on weather.

Had a good day yesterday finished painting in the bilges, then refitted my freshly varnished floor boards. Even got round to fitting the new mixer tap/shower head in the heads, not tested it yet as its all drained down for winter.
Need a nice calm day now as I need to go up the mast to replace the wind speed device but looking at the forecast that might have to wait a bit !!
Each time I tick a few jobs of the todo list I find a few more, could be a long job.

Bought the Old Girl a set of new (second-hand) cushions :D . The forepeak and quarterberth ones we got with the boat are possibly original; the saloon ones had been replaced but had certainly seen better days.

Today we had a couple of hours out at the mooring, running the engine, stripping headlining and removing the pulpit for repair to one of the bolts. Very pleasant with a glorious sunset :)

Sounds better than the 3deg C max and fog we had here all day! Just coulden't motivate myself to leave the fire and do some work on the boat, still ,things are pretty much under control and an end of Feb/ first week March launch date is planned.
