Trying to track down a GK29 in the USA

Post by Uncle Albert » Wed Jun 04, 2014 4:30 pm

In 2008 I bought my Centaur 'Aries of Lincoln' CR1702. The history that came with it interested me and I pursued the history of its first owner and recorded same in an article which was published in the Westerly magazine of Winter 2012. I subsequently met the initial owners daughter and had sight of the log books and some history. The original owner moved on to a GK29 and sailing to the USA (Chesapeake area) but then due to family situation had to sell the boat there and return to England. This would have been around 1981-1983 I think.

I wonder through these pages whether anyone might have any knowledge about a Westerly GK 29 that could perhaps enable me to complete the story and write a supplement to my initial article. It is my understanding that this boat was also called Aries of Lincoln or (possibly England), as Aries was the 'trade name used by this individual in both his professional and boating roles, (see article for explanation)

I realise its a long shot but maybe the Westerly Owners Association US branch might be able to generate some leads.

Here's hoping.

This http://www.itu.int/online/mms/mars/ship ... OF+LINCOLN is the only one shown on the ITU site - which is worldwide.

Hi Philip, yeah that link refers to me when I updated my radio details when I acquired CR1702. Your post has made me revisit some correspondence I have had with an aged chap who was a sailing partner of the first owner of my boat and on re-reading it I see that the name of the GK29 was probably 'Aries of Anglia'.

To expand a bit more on my post

The first owner of my Centaur was an RAF Air Vice Marshall who initially had a Pageant called 'Lincoln Aries' which is resident on the Blackwater and the owners are members of WOA, and I have met them at one or two WOA get-together's. He then up-sized to the Centaur 'Aries of Lincoln' and from there to the GK29. The Aries theme was due to the Aries name used on aircraft in the 1940's and 50's for navigation and record breaking flights so the Aries name is the thread associated with this owner.

So the question is now is there an' Aries of Anglia' GK29 still in the USA or elsewhere.

Looks like http://www.oceancruisingclub.org/index. ... 001-2/240-
confirms Aries of Anglia and story so far.
