Centaur Sail Number

I was born and bred on the Isle of Wight (yes, that's right, I'm a Caulkhead) and when I was much, much younger I used to cruise the Solent in a dinghy, stopping each night on some shore with a "boom tent". In those days I used to see the Westerly boats going by and I said to myself "One day I will own one of those". So, after many years living overseas and now happily returned to the UK, I have just bought a Centaur and just joined the WOA.
The point of this story is that I would like to determine the sail number of my new 'pride and joy'. There are no numbers on the existing sail and the previous owner was not a member of WOA. From a plate attached to the companionway I have number K1892 which is quoted on various certificates as the Yard No., the IMO number and/or the HIN. I have recently been informed by the "experts" at my club (SFCC on the Exe) that the sail number might be quite different.

So how can I determine the sail number?

Can anybody help, please?

Phone Caroline at Trafalgar Yachts / Westerly Spares at Fareham. She has a wealth of knowledge of all Westerly's - having worked for them, and now the holder of Westerly Yachts archives.

Welcome to the WOA!

If you find out the details could you let Tim know? He's got a database of Westerly yachts and is always keen for any nuggets of data....

Unfortunately Caroline at Trafalgar Yachts could not help unless I had the original owner's name or original boat name, which I don't have.

Any other ideas, please? It's not that important but it would be nice to close that question.

Best regards

Are there any numbers or letters on the underside of any locker covers in the cabin?

Dick, it is likely that the sail number will be CR1892. Although earlier Centaur's very definitely did not match, there was a point at which the numbers started to tally, and as yours is a later Centaur it almost certainly will match the yard number.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I've been away (not sailing, unfortunately) but I will certainly scrutinise under locker covers and everywhere else I can think of, as soon as I get the opportunity.

But it seems, provisionally, that I'm sail No CR 1892. In the absence of other evidence that is what I intend to use.

A very belated reply to earlier postings, but I have been sent an old photo by the previous owner that clearly shows my sail number is CR 1892. Hopefully, at last, that's cleared that up.
