Re: W33/Discus bilge keels.

Was it economical to repair? I hear 6-7k£ figures for a hull reinforcement.

Re: W33/Discus bilge keels.

It seems sailboatdata.com is at fault then. anybody knows the year, when Westerly started to reinforce the hulls?

Re: W33/Discus bilge keels.

Just found on another forum:
the last Griffon without fortified stubs was sail number 281
Griffons were phased out in 1981. If I opt for a Discus from '82-84, they should be a stronger construction, right?

Re: W33/Discus bilge keels.

"Modern boats loosing keel" is not new, see the Cheeki Rafiki case and the Belgian boat builder killed by his own design. Apparently many Westerly's got a lot more abuse that could take out any boat - and that for years. As I understood insurers nowadays require the hulls to be strengthened, thus la...

Re: Discus vs Fulmar?

I would like to stay near 10m, otherwise it'd be difficult to keep a lid on marina fees. (I don't intend to use the drying ability all the time). I prefer the aft cockpit version, as I undertand the layout it gives more locker space.

Re: W33/Discus bilge keels.

Apparently I shouldn't have the Westerly wiki out of my homework :): https://www.westerly-owners.co.uk/westerlywiki/index.php?title=Re_bedding_Keels It seems to me, that structural strengthening is/was necessary and resealing (2k £) in approx. every decade. So far haven't read about any Westerly loo...

Re: W33/Discus bilge keels.

I saw in a bilge-keeled Discus advertisement: " Twin keels (mountings reinforced)." Probably there was a reason behind... What budget should one expect for such an "upgrade"?

Re: W33/Discus bilge keels.

Sorry to revive an ancient thread. Heard that early Fulmars needed strengthening, anything related in Discus, produced around 1980?

Re: Discus vs Fulmar?

That's what I thought too, Steve, family needs space. On a Discus/w33 we could even receive guests for daysailing. As for the real sailing part: I considered buying a Fulmar in Spain. First trip then: Biscay - ookay... :| . Lots of bilge keel Centaurs crossed the pond, I don't think a Discus or w33 ...

Re: Discus vs Fulmar?

I had a brief look at the Storm but it apparently has less fuel tankage. Sailboatdata also lists a lesser SA/D for the storm. No idea where the latter is coming from, AFAIK the Storm has a taller rig...

Discus vs Fulmar?

I am after a bilge-keel boat and was 99% decided on a Fulmar but don't want to completely abandon the idea to go a little bigger. To decide, I'll need some input. Quickly about ourselves: right now family of 3 (might grow to 4 later) with a 5 year old kid. In the first couple of years we'd cruise th...

Re: Fulmar bilge keel bolts?

@Fulmar433: The cracks are where the keel meets the stub, external. Thank you for the link. BTW how many bolts are we talking about per keel?
@Jolly Roger: Thanks for the remarks. It is indeed a well kept boat, other than it's engine (it was repowered with a volvo 2002...)

Fulmar bilge keel bolts?

I am considering buying a bilge keel Fulmar. Are the keel bolts individually serviceable while afloat? Is there anything alarming if the gelcoat shows a "crack" near the attachment?

Re: RE Engine Fulmar

My Fulmar has the original Volvo 2002 (18hp) and I have never felt any need for additional power. I suppose I should add that my Fulmar is one of the last 32's built in 1991, so the engine isn't as old as most although it is 27 years old. In fact if I do open it up to full power, the transom seems ...
