Re: MD2B overheated & stopped

Jolly Roger, thanks. I'm definitely on the lookout for a sensor of some kind. The current guage is almost useless as you can't read it without doubling up or kneeling down. Assuming this guage is just a voltmeter, I had wondered about tapping into its supply and calibrating a simple alarm. I'm curre...

Re: MD2B gearbox seized: overheated?

Brightstar, Thank you for this. We probably had 20-30 minutes before the engine stopped due to no water. We were going fairly slowly with the tide so it wasn't working hard, but that is not the tlc that the engine needs... Some hours after the engine had stopped & I had patched the melted exhaust, I...

Re: Replacement engine for Centaur

Thanks Tyro & Hillary. Been down on the boat today and saw the angle iron bearers. Much less work than I thought :-) I might start annointing my bearer bolts with Plus Gas, so that they stand a better chance of letting go more easily when the day comes (be it soon or less so). Gave the injectors a g...

MD2B gearbox seized: overheated?

Hello, Following my overheating escapade (forgetting to open the water inlet cock), I'm on the boat & have checked for fuel delivery & the impeller is ok for now. Engine started easily. However, I can't get it in gear. It was ok (was very stiff when I got onto it two weeks ago) but had freed off nic...

LED spotlights.

This may be of interest to anyone thinking about such things: We have longer-term plans to redo the headlining & upgrade the lighting at that time. However, as a quick fix this has been brilliant (literally). Our centaur has 3 little spotlights in the cabin, each had a 20W halogen MR16 lamps. I boug...

Re: Replacement engine for Centaur

I was thinking of making a similar post to WillHC, as peering into the boat-shaped hole in the sea... From my research, which may be slightly ahead of WillHC's, IIRC if you buy a new Beta, they can supply mounts to fit your current ones. If secondhand, you have to live with whatever it comes with, a...

Re: MD2B overheated & stopped

If the engine can turn over freely by hand and you can feel the compression strokes and there are no external signs of damage you may well be lucky, so change the exhaust muffler, making sure that all of the melted rubber/plastic has been removed, OPEN the sea cock and try starting, leaving it idle...

Re: Roller furling won't rotate

Thanks for your input.
Armed with the knowledge that I wouldn't break anything (ratchet mechanism or whatever, as there is none), I applied some grunt & the thing started rotating. After a while & a bit of effort it became usable. Will need some TLC at some point though.

Re: MD2B overheated & stopped

Yep. Lesson learned. As first trip after a break of some years, we haven't developed any habits or routines. And this is our first boat with an inboard.

Re: Water collecting on cockpit seats

Hi, I knew the battery I had to hand was ropey, just hoped it would do the trick. I tried decompression & the handle. No chance! New battery did it fine. Took a surprisingly short amount of persistence to get it to run. However my subsequent post supersedes all that... We've now got the boat "home" ...

Re: Navigators & General WOA scheme

I found that N&G were about £20 more (nearly 20%) than GJW for broadly similar cover AFAICT. I also found that the 'preferential terms' offered by whoever does the GP14 CA insurance still were more expensive than GJW & Bishop Skinner. It would seem that CA insurance tie-ins are not necessarily a goo...

Ditto. I dislike using Facebook compounded by the irony that, despite them retaining all the information ever input, you can never find anything which severely restricts it's value as a forum. The old site is not terribly intuitive, so looking forward to the new one. I haven't seen the new site but ...

MD2B overheated & stopped

Having got the engine running & tested we moved the boat yesterday. Leaving Fowley Island at 05.00 on a falling tide, we were anxious to get out while there was still water enough. Unfortunately, what with the early hour, disturbed night before and the anxiety if getting stuck in the mud (again), we...

Re: Centaur engine instrument panel

Steve, Can you remember what the switches do? I assume they're not vital to the engine, being diesel. I interpreted the cold start device to be a small brass button (see pic) accessible by lifting the cockpit hatch. I haven't looked much at the engine from the inside yet. I'll make sure the stop han...

Re: Water collecting on cockpit seats

Hmmm. Trouble is as you say, it facilitates algal growth which looks shabby. We still haven't escaped yet. Last visit my old battery was unable to start the engine (now believed to be an MD2B) after I got the fuel through. I now have a biggish new battery & going out there tomorrow with the hope tha...
