Re: Removing MS gearbox?

WRT things going against me, the top two of the four bolts that hold the gearbox onto the engine have rusted and are no longer any recognisable size. There is not enough room to get a mole grip onto either one. There isn't vroom to get an oscillating tool onto them, or a Dremel to put some flats ont...

Re: Removing MS gearbox?

Im in a similar boat (ba-dum-tish) :-) and am looking to replace my gear box while afloat on my mooring in the coming weeks would be really interested if you were able to share your experience virtually some how...... as I have no idea of the scale of the operation or even where to begin (or even w...

Re: Removing MS gearbox?

Hi Jonathan, I have a spare MD2B engine complete with MS gearbox in my garage and am disassembling to fix an identical set in my boat at Hythe. You're welcome to visit Didcot to see it, or we could do something virtually? It wasn't on my 'to-do' list, but It doesn't look too hard. Regards, Paul Pau...

Re: Centaur/Pembroke rudder

Re stiff rudder, ours is similarly very stiff but functional. Not bent as stiffness is equal.
Mark mentioned lubrication - what was needed to free it off.
Thanks

Re: davits on Merlin28

Not directly and not sure what your concerns are, but in case it helps, our Centaur came with davits, the value of which I was a bit sceptical for various reasons. Performance hit mainly and out of proportion. However on our delivery trip I wanted the Avon inflated (Redcrest - same length but not as...

Thanks for that.

Re: MD2B gearbox seized: overheated?

I ended up sucking mine out with a vigorous little hand pump, so I would have expected it to get at least some of any debris that might have been in there. I only got about 200ml-ish, but the suction pipe has an angled end. Next time I'm down there, I'll try starting the engine in gear as Brightstar...

Removing MS gearbox?

Has anyone separated the MS gearbox from the MD2B/MD11C engine & propshaft in situ & afloat (Centaur).

If so, how tricky is it, what's involved?

I'm debating internally if there's any point in diving in to see if the problem is obvious or indeed resolvable.

Many thanks

Re: MD2B gearbox seized: overheated?

Roger, I've found the service manual for this. (here if anyone else is after it: http://boatinfo.no/lib/volvo/manuals/ms-msb.html#/0) Next opportunity I'm going to take the actuator assembly off & have a look. Given the nonsensical cost/lack of availability of parts, I'm not sure if there is any val...

Re: MD2B gearbox seized: overheated?

Alan, Many thanks. I will get the cable off to confirm. Re heat: I'm increasingly of the opinion that it is somewhat or entirely coincidental. The only other thing that occurred - it was dead calm with no seas to speak of all day - was that we were towed at 6 knots by the lifeboat* Could the prop ro...

Re: MD2B gearbox seized: overheated?

Brightstar, Many thanks. Encouraging re the oil being present. Two weeks ago I used a ring spanner on the actuator arm with moderate to low effort & that freed it & it was OK thereafter. Until now, now I can only move it by tapping it with a hammer. Yesterday I looked closely at the cable & attachme...

Re: MD2B gearbox seized: overheated?

I've just sucked the oil out & put fresh in.
This is what came out- it looks to me as if it has water in it as it is a greyish opaque colour, but not like the mayonnaise you get in a car with water in the oil.
Thoughts?
Many thanks

Re: MD2B gearbox seized: overheated?

Tyro,
The creeping such as it was, stopped when I topped the oil up. It didn't turn the prop, just a bit of clutch drag or similar..

How did you flush it? By sucking it out or is there a drain plug?

FWIW, I can easily turn the shaft by hand.
Cheers

Re: Navigators & General WOA scheme

Seawalk, As a new owner & member I went with N&G this time despite the premium being 20% higher than GJW, because we were short of time and I didn't have time to evaluate the member benefits. I found GJW happy to add benefits at no extra cost and to go back to them if I wanted to add something I mig...
