Re: MD2B - injector pump problem?

This (I hope) is the damaged pipe. It had been leaking for years! DSCN2692_opt.jpg ...and this is what it looked like in situ - and you can see some of the rust underneath DSCN2647_opt.jpg and these are some of the bits of metal filtered out of one of the changes of gearbox oil gearbox bits 2 colour...

Re: MD2B - injector pump problem?

Thanks Alan I'll certainly have a(nother) good scrape and brush when I've got the starter and alternator off (but before taking the heads off, I think, as I don't want the rust going in the cylinders!) The fairly serious happenening was a long-term leak from the coolant pipe just below the exhaust m...

Re: Head and side linings

That looks great! But what happens if you need to get at the inside of the hull - to find a leak, fit a new cleat or repair some damage? This is what would put me off doing that kind of job.

Re: MD2B - injector pump problem?

Thanks Philip, Alan. What about letting the engine pump oxalic/hydrochloric acid through to clean the waterways as recommended in another thread? I wouldn't want to do this if coolant is getting into the oil and possibly the cylinders so it'd have to wait till the gasket's done anyway. Soaking it in...

Re: MD2B - injector pump problem?

Wow! Thanks, Alan and Uncle! I have the workshop manual, thanks and shall print off the relevant pages so I can get them oily while I do the work. Your instructions make it sound much easier than I thought and I'm emboldened to try it now. Or rather, next time I go down to the boat which'll be in a ...

Re: MD2B - injector pump problem?

Thanks Alan. I've found a company in Southampton that does it and they reckon two hours (at £65 an hour) to service the injector pump. Plus taking it out and putting it back again. If that's really what it is, rather than the head gasket, should I be pleased or otherwise, I wonder? And if it's not ...

Re: MD2B - injector pump problem?

The chap who 'serviced' it between my buying and launching it clearly is less than favourite. He also didn't re-grind one of the heads seacock cone valves properly when he overhauled it, but has agreed to have another go when the boat comes out in the autumn. He failed to start the engine because th...

Re: MD2B - injector pump problem?

Thanks, Uncle Albert. I'll bear that in mind. And thanks for the bad news Derek.

The phrase 'replacement engine' is beginning to enter my consciousness :-( - I think it's financial support I'll be looking for!

Re: MD2B - injector pump problem?

Hmmm.... I didn't like the look of the oil when I had a look yesterday - a bit greyish and more than I thought there should have been - that could be caused by water in it, which would fit with a head gasket :-( I have the workshop manual downloaded thanks, but most of it seems like gobbledegook to ...

Re: MD2B - injector pump problem?

That's a thought. Thanks. I'll try that when go back to the boat (which'll be a couple of weeks now). A new diaphragm (or indeed a new diagram, which is what I typed the first time) isn't tooo expensive. If that's what the problem is and if I can find one. By the way, I forgot to mention before that...

Re: MD2B - injector pump problem?

It rained ALL day on Friday but yesterday was warm and sunny. Just as I was starting another Centaur owner came along and offered to help :-) We (well, mostly I with his supervision and advice) went through the whole system again from tank to injectors, checking both filters (very clean and obviousl...

Re: MD2B - leaking pipe causing severe rust

The biggest bits came from the starboard side of the engine, behind the starter motor and below the exhaust manifold (and the pipe that was causing the problem). As I said, there was one about 10mm thick and maybe 40 x 30 (although not rectangular) and a couple of other smaller ones. And loads I can...

Re: MD2B - injector pump problem?

Thanks again for thinking about this Mike. I tried the engine first thing this morning; it started hesitantly first time, chucked out smoke and oily soot again for half a minute and then gave up again. It's chucking it down at the moment so I'm reluctant to lie down in the cockpit and start taking t...

Re: MD2B - injector pump problem?

Thanks, Mike. We did the turning-over-by-hand-and-bleeding-the-fuel-lines bit a couple of weeks back when I thought the lift pump had given up - and it worked. Then the engineer operated the throttle control on the engine itself, and adjusted the linkages so that they all worked properly - still no ...

Re: MD2B - injector pump problem?

Hmmm yes..... Thanks for this, Brightstar Done all that in recent weeks but not since this latest problem started. I've cleaned out the fuel tank as well as I can with no access hatch and filtered the old fuel several times so it's as clear as a bell - and added mostly new stuff now. Filters are new...
