Re: Volvo Penta engine confusion

Hmmm. Mine was £5500 although I had to spend another thousand on keel root, stern tube and heads valves. I knew the engine wasn't tip top but I was too mean to spend £300 on an engine survey. Mistake. The existing engine is 40 years old (your Centaur was obviously one of the last - presumably you ...

Re: Volvo Penta engine confusion

AAARRRGGGHHH!!! (sorry if I startled you) I've just spoken to the boss of Marine Enterprises who tells me that most of the engines shown on their website have been sold and the new ones haven't appeared there yet. Therefore all the research I've done on them is wasted. And he says (having re-...

Re: Volvo Penta engine confusion

Thanks Smudger - I'd recently looked at that in fact but it looks pretty grotty and if it turns out to be no better than the one I have... I think what I'm going to do is: Get the local engineer to have a good look at the old but serviceable MD2b and if we both think it's worth the few hundred it's ...

Re: Hello from a new Centaur owner.

Welcome, Jon :-) I've not been here long myself - bought Centaur 1361 in the spring and still trying to get her engine to work. Everyone I talk to tells me they're great boats, so I'm looking forward to being able to sail her - as, I daresay, are you. There's a vast wealth of experience and expertis...

Re: Volvo Penta engine confusion

Hi Steve Yes - the local enginer told me about Marine Enterprises and I've had a look at their website. Do their engines tend to be reliable? They're in Dorchester which is within reach of Southampton which is where the boat is. A few of their engines would be suitable but of course we have no idea ...

Re: what prop on a westerly 21

Ideal solutions are nearly always expensive, especially anything to do with boats, I find!

Re: Volvo Penta engine confusion

Well... I can find a Beta 20, from the agent in Hamble but they want an arm and a leg for it. And they say it needs just about everything in the engine compartment replacing. Are they really cheaper at the Boat Show? The new (but I suspect discontinued) Vetus 20hp may be the way to go. But there are...

Re: VERY STIFF PULL PULL WHEEL STEERING

Something jammed between the rudder and the skeg/hull?
What's the rudder made of? If it's not neutrally buoyant maybe it's straining the pivots?

Re: Volvo Penta engine confusion

Many thanks for this JR. I'd realised that 25hp was probably a bit much and have been looking at s/h 15 - 20 hp engines. The local mechanic says he can lay his hands on a new 20hp Vetus for £3500 but I'm not sure I want to spend that much, even though that seems like a good price for it (but then I...

Volvo Penta engine confusion

As regular readers will know (and probably be sick and tired of by now) I've got engine trouble in my Centaur. In looking for alternatives, there seem to be several Volvo Penta engines with similar names/numbers which are almost identical in appearance. I have an MD2b, and I know that the MD1b and M...

Re: Replacement engine for Centaur?

Since I'm currently 70 miles away from the boat, does anyone happen to know the overall dimensions of the MD2b? And, crucially, the distance between the bearers?

Re: Replacement engine for Centaur?

Yep - that's the uncomfortable truth!

But my eyes would have been open a lot wider if I'd found this forum beforehand, and taken a lot of the advice. Still, we live and learn.

Re: Replacement engine for Centaur?

Thank you, Jason & Mr E. The engine next door, being an MD2b, will be the same age as mine, so even if it works at the moment, something else is bound to go wrong. Unless I discover that it's been thoroughly overhauled. I think the MD11C and 2003 are nearly as old as well, so the same might apply. B...

Re: Mistakes and Misdemeanour

First cruise as a 'qualified' Dazed Kipper. Booked a Victoria 34 from Joint Services at Haslar and got a crew together. Knew the boats well, the local waters pretty well and some of the crew hardly at all. I was very aware of my responsibilities so went round the boat very thoroughly with the CPO in...
