Re: Anchor chain and rode

Hear, hear. Chain is definitely preferable as it holds the boat steadier, is less likely to drag or chafe and will usually stow itself in the locker with no help from you. And you can use a shorter scope, as Roger says. Get the heaviest you can afford and will fit in your gear; secondhand (boat jumb...

Re: seized Gearbox md3b from a Pentland

I had a similar problem with my old MD2b - the engineer who was supposed to service the engine in my absence (I won't do that again!) didn't check the gearbox oil and..... I did exactly as suggested above (bar the cranking it round by hand, which seems a good idea) and filtered out lots of very smal...

They could probably tell you how to fix it.

Re: Anyone in the south with an MD2B?

I'll be around from tomorrow afternoon, sailing to Eling to scrub off in the evening. Could call at Hythe on the way back on Thursday and will be around till Saturday. I sailed through the moorings last week and didn't see Katy - is she in the water yet?

Keep looking - you never know. I think there are one or two in the 'for sale' section of the site.

Re: Hello and port light hinges!

...let us fervently hope that neither you nor any of us ever find ourselves in that desperate situation! Did we decide that Tough Resin was the stuff to use for the hinges? Those in use are the Mark II version and I thought they were made of something else. Or maybe not. Is the weather down there as...

Re: Mad or what....

I bought a Centaur three years ago, which turned out to be the wrong one and has required a lot of time and money spending on it - including a new engine! Before you buy, get hold of a copy of Inspecting The Aging Sailboat by Don Casey. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Inspecting-Sailboat-International-Mari...

Re: Masthead sheaves

I've sprayed some PTFE lubricant into my mast track (and elsewhere) and the main now goes up and down like a dream. How long it will last remains to be seen, but it's easily repeatable.

David and Caroline are away, and the shop is shut, until next week - I tried to phone them earlier today.

Re: Penta Horsepower

The MD2b was rated at 25hp - but I'd be surprised if any engine 40-plus years old can still develop its maximum original power!

Re: Centaur Keel Bolt Leak

I'm sure Sikaflex can supply the right sealant for the job - at a price. I talked to their rep at the Beaulieu Boat Jumble last year and it seems they have a bewildering array!

Re: fasteners storage behind seats centaur

I have these too. Try 'phoning Caroline Hardy at Trafalgar as she may know where to get one. 01329 823577 If you can't find a direct replacement, maybe a hasp (as in hasp and staple for a padlock) would do the trick? On mine, replacement is simply a case of undoing two screws into the seat-back, but...

Re: Navman S100 Speed Log transducer paddlewheel

The NASA impeller has magnets in two of the four blades. I've actually just bought one from Force 4 for the same price as on line and without postage costs (which would have been as much again!) . You even get a new spindle with it.

Does it need magnets inside, like mine does?

Well done! That sounds like a bit of an epic!

I was up that way (at Robin Hood's Bay) at Easter and didn't much like the look of the coast around there.

Bucket and chuck it!
