Re: Snow snow snow

Here in the SE I planned and got myself ahead of the game in every 'good' weather window we have had since December so I too am ready to launch, and this is the second time, I had planned it 2 weeks ago when the tides were right, but the foul wet weather then scuppered the plans as I was not able to...

Re: Mast wiring on a Centaur

Mine goes inside the heads and is clipped to the bulkhead before going up through the deck after a junction box. My boat has been rewired so possibly this route was forced upon the previous owner. Mine is sail number 1702 if that helps. If you are replacing the plugs then a potential cost saving can...

Re: Insurance

This is a pet hate of mine (insurances that is) every year i invest in a phone calls in regard to every insurance renewal notice I get and to argue/explain with the 'numbnut' on the end of the line that I only expect if anything a small increase pertaining to inflation at the most, but also a reduct...

Re: Overheating on one cylinder head

To elaborate on what 'the trick is' I mean that the removal of the cylinder needs extreme care to preserve the piston rings as it is a substantial lump of metal to maneouvre shoud you be doing it with the engine in situ. Parts are available My local VP dealer supplied the kit of parts, comprising Li...

Re: Plotters - any recommendations?

I treated myself to a Garmin 551 (without the depth stuff) and have been very impressed. Used it across the Thames and round the back of Sheppy last year on a WOA rally. I was initially a little sceptical in regard to accuracy expected, but it is absolutely spot on. Only thing I have not sorted out ...

Re: Rebuilding an MD11C

I refer to response to your hunting for a Centaur Have a look at to be assured that they can be fixed. They are very much 'meccano' in design and there are little or no electrickery bits as per new engines. http://www.westerly-owners.co.uk/woaforum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2244#p8078 Also if you ask, som...

Re: Hunting a Centaur.......

Like the previous correspondant, it is a buyers market, do not feel embarrassed about making an offer that to you might seem cheeky and to the seller might seem disgraceful, Once the seller discusses with SWMBO who knows what pressures would be applied to sell. I recently thought I was going to have...

Looks like you have the start of what I had last year. see thread Volvo Penta MD11C Lots of Water in the Oil How? Re: Volvo Penta MD11C Lots of Water in the Oil How?

Hi Aquaplane, thanks for the tip re the cold start button. I was planning to go more sophisticated with a lever pivoting on the strangely wired bolt just to the right of the button, (what is that wire for?????) and a bicycle spoke arrangement to activate it from the cockpit. Been too cold to go to t...

Re: winterising a volvo 2002

Along with all the aforementioned I also use the hand starter to just rotate the engine a few turns every month during the lay up so things don't get set. And the impeller vanes do not get 'memory bends' in them. I have found that it takes at least 3 bucket full of water to purge the system and then...

Re: Volvo Penta MD11C Lots of Water in the Oil How?

Thanks Neil for the info and list of potential aspects which I may be looking forward to next year!!! I must say that the 3 or 4 hours I have run the engine since completing the rebuild have shown it to be just as powerful and it seems quieter and smoother than before (but that may be my imagination...

Re: Replacement alternator for MD11C

My son in law runs an auto electric supply business and he has supplied me with a replacement alternator for my MD11C just this last week. Its a 45 Ah output and will not be anywhere near the cost you have indicated. Contact him on 01376 519300 or fax details of your need to 01376 519008 if you like...

Re: Volvo Penta MD11C Lots of Water in the Oil How?

Last entry for this log by me. Well its all back together and today it started first turn of the key. Sounds sweet and just a small water leak from the thermostat housing to sort out along with double checking the connections to the Alternator and tensioning the belt. All that now remains is to sort...
