Re: Lazy Jack Lines
I made up my own when I had a Renown. I wandered around a marina and studied how they were rigged and where on the mast and along the boom they were fitted. I bought small pulleys but I have since seen a few made with just bowlines, some 6mm cordage, and a couple of cleats which were mounted each si...

Re: Oil change suction pump
Lidl and Aldi frequently have 12v oil pumps at a cheap price in their twice weekly offers. Can't remember how much but well under £20, I think about a tenner. Bought one 3 years ago and does engine oil and gearbox oil without mess. The Pelas are very good but you do have a largish tank with them whe...

Re: Solar panels
It's funny reading what I wrote a few years ago. I've now discarded the Rutland Wind genny, and have only used the Aquagen once. And guess what, I have 300w of sloar panels on board now. 2 x 100 are floating. I move them around the deck as and when I want them and even on cloudy days they give out e...

Re: MD2B overheated & stopped
As you've run the engine with no coolant water it's odds on that the impellor in the water pump has taken grave exception to spinning without any water and will have shredded itself. I think this will reveal why you've no water flow. I'd also check that you've not got any discarded impellor vanes st...

Re: Whitlock wheel steering
Hi Irene, I did mine last winter. I found it was quite straight forward but I've since found out that there are 2 types of mechanisms. Whitlock and Edson. On my boat it's the Whitlock version. Once you get into the top of the pedestal it's all nicely laid out for you and from the description below y...

Re: Adding a boom vang to a 76 centaur
I've just had another thought using a bit of lateral thinking. Attached an eyed bit of rope to one of the spare holes in the mast step base using a shackle for instance. The other end of this rope has an eye somewhere near the gooseneck. Make up cloth straps with a metal ring which fastens through t...

Re: Adding a boom vang to a 76 centaur
Anyone know how I can fit horns to the front of the boom? (Plus how to make up a locking slider) Yes I did it to my Renown. I made up a modified nut and bolt to replace the pin that held the boom onto/into the goose neck. I welded stainless steel horns onto the head of the bolt and on to the nut. I ...

Re: East Scotland Pilot Book
There used to be a Clyde Cruising Club one for NE Scotland which I have on board...but that's 500 miles away. It included the Orkneys and the Shetlands. I assume it must have been reprinted. My copy is from the 1980s! Have you tried Imray? There's also the Cruising Association Almanac too which is m...

Re: Advice on equipment for a Westerly Storm Cruiser
+1 with all the replies. If going on an off shore trip I hire a liferaft. This last summer it cost me about £250 for a six month hire of a 6 man canister and it was hard to lift it was so heavy. A liferaft came with my boat but was about 2/3 rds the weight of the hired one and virtually useless. The...

Re: operation controls for Eberspacher D1LC heater
The red light gives you the indication that the eber is "on". The rotating dial is your thermostat and when that's on max the green light should come on. When the cabin reaches desired temperature of the thermostat setting then the green light switches off. Then comes back on when the temp...

Re: Pressure release cap. Mercedes OM636.
Hello Mike, A wander into Halfords might be an idea to see what sort of pressure variations radiator caps have...or may be have a word with your local garage mechanic. However I'm wondering if that is the answer to your problem. Have you thought about fitting an expansion tank? All it needs is a bit...

Re: Corsair Anchor Locker Alteration.
Mike Buggy, who sometime posts on here modified his Oceanranger to take the chain into the portside fwd locker. If you're a member it might be worth while contacting him, he's very approachable. If not it's only £15 to join. ( The Oceanranger is a Corsair with a sugar scoop at the stern) On my Ocean...

Re: Pageant boom rigging
It's a standard fitting/arrangement on a lot of early Westerlys. If you're in a marina or boatyard have a wander around a have a look at a Centaur Berwick etc etc. The "horseshoe" arrangement lets the boom rotate to furl the mainsail. It should have a line running off the bottom of the hor...

Re: Main sheet traveller
I tnink Roger has probably answered your mainsheet track question. I will add though that I just use a screwdriver blade and the heel of my hand to break through/ break off the fibreglass covering over the nuts. It's very easy to do and scrape it all clear. Your roller reefing could be many things a...
