Re: Centaur pulling the engine

How do you stick the lifterus open? Oh i see there may be a decompression lever on the front of the engine at the valve cover. Apparently not all 2003s have this lever. If I do what are the various positions? I guess there should be one for all exhaust valves open all shut and one shut? If I don't h...

Re: Centaur pulling the engine

I should also ask if there is a way to start this engine without a starter. Perhaps I can use an impact driver on the crank bolt? I would just like to verify it will run before throwing good money after bad.
Thanks guys you are very helpful.

Re: Centaur pulling the engine

That is a great tip! I'm in the US so I will check with US suppliers of ring gears. I was able to find a used complete flywheel for 250USD the seller wouldn't separate the ring gear because their labor would make the price the same. Did you swap the ring gear with the engine on the boat?

Re: Centaur pulling the engine

Well I finally gothe that starter out and it turns out it was working fine. Problem was the ring gear is severely corroded and has little brown nubs instead of teeth. Also the motor is a penta 2003 not the original. There is no water in the crank case and it is not seized so it in theory could run a...

Re: Wiley Ports on a centaur

Here's a picture of the wiley port we put in our centaur. It was a fairly easy installation just used an angle grinder to enlarge the existing hole and epoxied it onto the hull. So far it hasn't leaked a drop and best of all cost us $8! Needs some cleanup but our boat isn't too pretty so not sure I ...

Westerly sink pump

Are these units serviceable? Mine is gummed up. I can get a pump out of it every 5 minutes or so. The pedal goes down and very slowly returns. If not what pump will fit?

Re: Sailrite sail kits

well the main is done and on the boat. Problem is it is 6" to tall! The sailrite specs for the sail were 28' 6". So what do I do now? I could recut the foot which sounds like a pain or perhaps the head or maybe I will just use the roller boom and take a full turn out of the bottom. Any thoughts on h...

Re: Sailrite sail kits

The main is nearly done just a couple of sewn rings to install. All in all a good experience.

Re: Sailrite sail kits

I went ahead and got the sailrite kit. I live in the USA so it made sense for me. The directions are excellent. So far I have seamed a few panels, installed the batten pockets, the reef point patches and the clew reinforcement patches. It is challenging but within my abilities and more importantly t...

Re: Sailrite sail kits

I looked on the Googles and was unable to find anyone else selling precut sail kits. Do you know of anyone else?

Thanks

Sailrite sail kits

Has anyone sewn a mainsail using a sailrite kit? I'm leaning in that direction since I have more time than money and have a good quality machine to do the stitching. The materials quote is 660USD. They also give the sail dimensions as p 28.6 and e 11.6. Which is larger than the original but the orig...

Here is another example using a rear stay mounted sail whose only purpose is to control the tiller.

Sheet to tiller self steering with twin keels

Does anyone have experience with sheet tiller steering setups with the dual keeled westerlys. I have a centaur and obtained an excellent book on the subject. Self steering without a wind vane by Lee woas. He mentions how different sized keels affect the steering but does not mention the dual keel. I...
