New engine occasionally overheats
My Regatta 290 has a brand new (well, now two years old) Volvo D1-20F engine and saildrive which has been dealer serviced over the winter and runs sweet as a nut with only 70 hours from new. Twice now the engine overheat has sounded and after stopping the engine and re-starting, all is well. The raw...

Bilges taking on water
I find that my Regatta 290 takes on water in the bilges not at an alarming rate but it should be possible to keep her watertight as she has a saildrive so no water should enter from any shaft gland. The water is definitely sea water and not fresh water. I did strip and grease the Blakes seacocks bef...

Merlin / R290 mainsheet traveller conversion
I am struggling to live with the standard mainsheet traveller arrangement on my Regatta 290 especially when racing. A logical (to me at least) conversion would be to fit a full width traveller across the cockpit seats at the front of the cockpit.
Has anyone done this please?

Re: Navigators & General WOA scheme
I believe that the WOA / N&G relationship is likely to be of greater value if it is managed. Is there a WOA member who owns this to anyone's knowledge?

Mooring chain locker problem
I have just anchored my Regatta 290 for the first time in Lulworth Cove - what a beautiful spot, especially this time of year when we where the only yacht in there. Anyway, on raising the anchor using a manual windlass all went well until the last few yards - when the chain stopped dropping below th...

Re: Navigators & General WOA scheme
Can I ask if anyone in WOA actively manages the "relationship" with N&G? If not then I would not be surprised if any "benefits" had not been eroded by time. As a recently retired WOA member who used to work in the insurance industry in the City of London, I would be delighted...

Merlin spinnaker pole - mast fitting
I am rigging my Regatta 290 (Merlin) to use a spinnaker. Z spars have supplied the mast ring for the spinnaker pole but they are not sure how high up the mast this should be attached - they think 600mm up from the gooseneck. Can a Merlin owner with spinnaker pole fitting please give me their measure...

Regatta logo
My newly acquired Regatta 290 has, like all Regattas a logo on each side above the deck slightly forward of the cockpit and my logo was no longer looking very fresh to say the least. I tried Trafalgar Yacht Services but they could not help so I contacted Ken Freivokh who sadly does not have the orig...

Re: Electrics up the mast
Yes thank you and in that context is the negative taken to be the mast in order to reduce the number of wires run up it? Like a car where the body is the negative side of the wiring

Electrics up the mast
I have two three pin plugs which run wiring up the mast. How are the lights earthed - is it the mast itself? Any mast wiring resources would be most welcome. Thanks

What if anything does the hull / yard Nr mean?
My boat has a very boring hull / yard number: GF 45. What if anything does this mean or tell one about the boat. Does anyone understand the Westerly hull build identification. Just removed a seacock which is still perfectly serviceable but it has "GF 45" handwritten on it in marker pen so ...

Regatta 290 bad manners
I sailed my newly purchased Regatta 290 today and while being very pleased with her sailing performance, I found her quite bad mannered under engine. At 5 to 6 knots under power the large rudder (taken from the Tempest I understand when the Merlin went sugar scoop) makes her very sensitive to rudder...

Merlin / Regatta 290 steaming light
Does anyone know what make the combined deck/steaming light is and especially what lightbulb it takes on a Regatta 290 / Merlin? Thanks

Westerly Regatta 290 logo
I have just purchased a Westerly Regatta 290 – number 5 of only 11 built. The striking Ken Freivokh interior is in as new condition but sadly the Regatta 290 logo on the outside is very worn. Is it possible please that someone has an image of the Westerly Regatta 290 logo and / or details of font an...

Seacock replacement
Having just purchased a 1993 built Regatta 290 I have to replace the heads sink drain seacock. As it is my first Westerly, can I just check that they didn't use imperial threads? Does anyone know what thread size this seacock is likely to be please? Also the toilet bowl fills very slowly when the se...
