Re: The Wild West
Just to add to Nigel's post, I don't think there was mention of the small Marina at Topsham run by Trouts. a call ahead is advisable but there will usually be a pontoon berth if you wanted it with toilet and water/power. Dries out onto mud. There is a Quay also which will be less expensive but with ...

Re: Preventing brown stains on the hull
My Fulmar lives on the Exe and we have similar problems here - my previous Sadler suffered as well so the mud does not discriminate! On layup in Autumn I use Oxalic Acid diluted from a concentrate and used from a small hand spray bottle with one of the pads from the kitchen after we have finished do...

Re: Replacing Ocean 33 5-sheave deck organisers. How do you get them off?
Sadly I have to agree - on my Fulmar the headlining did have to come down - fittings as Big Andy says. I bit the bullet as on my 37yr old boat the deck organisers were shot and the rope clutches ineffectual - both replaced with Spinlock - 2x5 sheave deck organisers - not doubled up - fits well acros...

Re: Rusting keels and encapsulating.
Roger's process seems excessive to me - I have managed my previous Sadler and now my Fulmar with just a quick wet&dry to remove any build up of rust, 1 coat of Fertan, leave for any length of time(!), 2 coats of Primocon and then 2 coats of antifoul - usually lasts several years but does return ...

Re: Marine Surveyor Recommendations?
I have used Mike Horwood (BSc Phd MIMarsEST MIET CMarEng CEng !!!!) of Alpha Yacht Surveys (www.alphamarine.co.uk) for the purchase of 2 boats now. His work is thorough and his reports likewise. When I purchased my first boat the broker said his was the best survey report he had seen and took his de...

Re: Regatta 290 bad manners
Ditto my Fulmar. Finger light under sail but very different under engine. Needed a firm hand constantly on the tiller. Also the fitted Autohelm 2000 couldn't cope except in calm seas and even then could veer off unexpectedly (no joy when you are down below making a cup of coffee!) and so I upgraded ...

Re: Fulmar Main Sheet Traveller
Roger and David thanks. The traveller has to come off to access the wheels. Fortunately the end bolt is through the transom and the Starboard nut was accessible in the cockpit locker. Now at home I could remove the wheels easily - only circlips securing them - but accessing the broken sheaves on the...

Fulmar Main Sheet Traveller
The traveller on my 1980 Bilge Keel Fulmar is worn, the car is difficult to move under strain using the control lines - I sometimes grab the sheet low down to move it across. I don't think the car is yet in danger of coming off the track but I want to make life easier and efficient for me! So I need...

Re: Autopilot for Fulmar
I used mine sailing solo, for first time last weekend as well - interesting point though was the default setting was with the gybe preventer on! Great if you want to avoid accidental gybes but not if you're downwind solo. I had to switch it off in the settings to be able to gybe in wind vane mode. Sa...

Re: Autopilot for Fulmar
OK so I cleaned out some damp balsa, less than 15mm, back to something firm and will wait for it to dry out somewhat - not easy in the current weather! It is covered from the rain! I am starting a trip in 10 days so am wondering whether I could use a structural adhesive like 3M 5200FC to backfill th...

Fulmar Cockpit seats support
This is question which is included in a post I have on another topic, but that one may not raise the hoped for response! My question is what is below the cockpit seats on my newly acquired Fulmar. Before I attack the headlining which is in good condition, I'd like to know what I will find! My new Ev...

Re: Autopilot for Fulmar
Just had an Evo 100 fitted to my Fulmar. Wonderful piece of kit, especially when interfaced with a Raymarine e75 mfd! Sensor has gone into the locker below the Port berth - behind the heads to get it as close to the centre of the boat as possible. The ACU is in the aft-most locker under the quarter ...

Re: Anchor for Fulmar
JulianS, that is very helpful. I shall go for the 15kg Rocna as well. I was considering the 12kg Vulcan but having moved int up in cardboard it doesn't sit as well as the Rocna. Did you ever find you needed a bow protector or shield. I have read a lot of mixed reviews for the SS options but wondered...
