Re: Drying out on a Tempest 31
Splitpin Thank you so much for the confidence boost. Having moved up from small boats, for me... the Tempest is big! and worried me that it might tip forward or damage the rudder with the weight. I am so wanting to dry her out on a bank in the Clyde so that I can check anodes and things. Cheers Paul

Re: Drying out on a Tempest 31
Thanks for your reply...
When you dry out, do you ever have crew onboard? Do you have any stability problems with crew walking about when they are onboard and the boat is drying?

Drying out on a Tempest 31
Has anyone dried out on an overnight stop in a Westerly Tempest 31?
Is the rudder strong enough to support the weight?

Cheers for the info...splitpin wrote:Yes, it is behind the bulkhead in the port cabin. The upper part of it is removable by taking the caps of 4 buttons which cover the retaining screws.

Re: Water tank on Tempest
On my Tempest I have the main tank of 112 litres just under the filler neck inside the sugar scoop. The second of 50 litres is under the centre of the aft starboard berth. Is your main tank is the sugar scoop hidden behind a bulk head or something? I lifted up the bunk boards but could only see bat...

Water tank on Tempest
I have a Tempest with the bog at the front of the boat
I've spent a good hour looking for the water tank! I can't find it anywhere although it definitely has one. Water inlet is on Port aft side. The pipes from the inlet vanished somewhere under the fuel tank!
Any ideas?
Thanks
Paul

Re: Looking at Tempest 31
I was having a think about the ballast ratio on the Tempest... it's only 29%!! Putting the idea of Atlantic ocean crossings to one side ;) I will be single handed sailing most of the time as my wife won't be much help below. I don't see myself as a novice! but also, I don't have years an years of ex...

Steve, no problem. Lula Belle (my username) is the name of my present boat...
Jolly Roger, thanks for the pointer about the 3/4 rig... That's is definitely worth thinking about.
Cheers

Re: Looking at Tempest 31
Thank you for your replies... definitely got me thinking more about storage and the return trip. I've spent so much time thinking about getting across to the Caribbean when it sounds like the challenge will be the getting back! I've promised my wife that this WILL be the very last boat I buy :) so t...

Looking at Tempest 31
I've been looking for my dream mid life crisis (50 next year) boat. At some point nearer retirement, I want to sail across (from the UK) to the Caribbean and beyond! Because of my eventual ocean crossing adventure, I have been looking at bigger boats around the 33-3 size6. I single handed sail as my...

Re: "The long or short"
Just to finish off this thread... I ended up buying a brand new long shaft Mercury 9.9 with electric start and remotes. This is for a Westerly W21 sailboat. The cost was £2020 plus £50 for the cables. I slung it on the original drop down bracket thingy that was used with the old 8HP Honda (1995). Th...

Re: "The long or short"
Six knots is a great speed for a 21-foot boat! What's the waterline length? Bear in mind also that the GPS is giving you speed over the ground, which may, of course, be more or less than your speed through the water, depending on which way the tide's going. But that's not a major consideration in t...

Re: "The long or short"
So sorry to hear about your family illness... family always come first over everything else. I bought Lula Belle in November, don't know the sail number as the main got replaced with a furling system. I put her back in the water in January and have sailed her silly all around the Clyde ever since! A...

Re: "The long or short"
Simon,
I've just noticed that you also have a W21? (Mine is a 1978, W21).
What maximum speed do you get with your Tohatsu?
What's the best cruising speed (fuel efficiency etc) with this engine?
Also, with a single cylinder, how do you find the vibration?
Cheers

Re: "The long or short"
It's a shame the way two strokes have gone... I wonder if we do actually leave the EU, that will change :? That ebayed Tohatsu looks soooo tempting at that price... even though the little voice in my head says I need more power! With all the tweaking to the prop etc on these engines it could be idea...
