VERY STIFF PULL PULL WHEEL STEERING
I have a westerly renown with centre cockpit steering which has been laid up for a while. When out of the water the rudder was free but in the water and operated by the steering wheel it is very stiff. Any members had the same problem? I have greased everything I can and slackened the cable in condu...

MD2B COLD START BUTTON
The control cable mechanism does not work properly and on further inspection did not push in the cold start button. This button seems very stiff but the engine was not used for many months prior to me purchasing the boat so there could be a little corrosion making it reluctant to move. I am intendin...

Bilge cleaning
I have a Westerly Renown and have completed all the engine maintenance but I now need to clean the bilges through. There a little oil (from the previous owner) and grime so I need a cleaner. I have been recommended Bilgex but cannot find anywhere that sells 1 litre size. I really did not want to buy...

Re: MD2B ENGINE OIL OVERFILL
Hi guys, I used my extractor pump to remove excess engine oil and ran the engine in gear for about 40 minutes on the mooring in the marina. There was a small amount of oil coming out of the exhaust for a few minutes and then water ran clear ok. No engine oil leaks so no gaskets blown. I think I have...

Re: MD2B ENGINE OIL OVERFILL
Hi Dereck, The excess oil I pumped out was nice and clean with no milkiness or water in it. I have been told that excess oil goes down the breather and then into one of the air filters and hence this causes white smoke. I should just add that the white smoke was only apparent when the revs were incr...

MD2B ENGINE OIL OVERFILL
I have Westerly Renown with a Volvo MD2B engine. We went out yesterday, the first time since changing the engine oil. After 10 minutes or so after increasing the revs, we noticed white smoke coming out of the exhaust so we immediately returned to the marina slowly. Upon investigation we found that t...

Re: Uncomfortable sleeping
Thanks for your ideas guys. I like the idea of duvet under and over and I shall try this first. If it works ok for me I can get a couple of new ones for the boat from Tesco. The underneath one can have higher tog rating and thus be thicker. This, hopefully will do the job. The stern cabin is empty s...

Re: Raw Water Strainer
Hi Mike, I did the raw water strainer job yesterday with my son and it went a treat. We removed the old cracked strainer and the leaking pipework bodged up with silicon and all the old rusted jubilee clips. We cleaned all the spigot end of the valve, the sea cock is one of the new Marelon ones and f...

Re: Cockpit table
Hi Steve, I have looked at the Pentland on the yachtsnet website and it just exactly what I am looking for. I was going to get separate cup holders but the design on the pentland combines everything which is just the job. Thanks Steve, for suggesting I look at this pentland and thanks for your advic...

Cockpit table
I am not really sure if this is the right section of the forum but here goes. I have a Westerly Renown with wheel steering on a pedestal and I want to install a fold down cockpit table fixed to the front of the pedestal unit. Have any members carried out this project and if so are there any sketches...

Re: Raw Water Strainer
I really must thank all you guys for your help and suggestions. The new strainer is in fact a Vetus plastic type with underside pipework connections so all your comments are very relevant. I think in summary, I will mount the strainer about 6 inches above the water line but not more than 12 inches. ...

Re: Raw Water Strainer
Thanks so much for your reply and your welcome. Wotan was in Scotland for a time but not sure when. She does have a dark blue hull and white topsides and I bought her from the previous owner at Kemps Marina in Southampton. He bought her from a marina at Whitehaven and I believe she cruised the Irish...

Raw Water Strainer
I am a very new member, just a week! I have a Westerly Renown with a Volvo Penta MD2B which has been fully serviced and runs well. The old water strainer is plastic and looks a bit knackered as does the pipework which is a mixture of all sorts. I have bought some proper water pipe from Keypart and n...

Uncomfortable sleeping
On my Westerly Renown which sleeps 6 ok, the cushions are vinyl clad and easy to clean etc. They are however, uncomfortable to sleep on and I ache in every bone I have after sleeping on board. I cannot really afford to replace all the cushions with new ones. Has any members encountered the same issu...

Re: saloon floor Seahawk
I have just finished fitting B&Q carpet tiles to the cabin floors on my Westerly Renown and it looks great. I also have a Dufour 2800 and this carpet has been laid on her for several years. If you have a spillage or worn area, you can simply put in a replacement tile. With the new floor just lai...
