Re: Centaur engine instrument panel
Having owned 2 Centaurs in the past, a 1973 and a later 1979 I can confirm that the item indicated by the pink arrow is indeed the cold start button (MD2B MD11C) and yes a pretty poor position! I got used to finding it with just the front engine cover off. The switches/knobs on the engine control pa...

Re: Internal smell
Many thanks for all your responses. I'll try all of the suggestions. This is my 4th boat and I've never had quite a smell like it. Fingers crossed for a smell free 2016 season!

Internal smell
I purchased our Konsort about 2 years ago. We noticed after purchasing her a weird internal smell which has basically impregnated everything and we can't get rid of it. We've described it as smelling like an old church!! The smell could also be said to have a chemical like aroma. There are no chemic...

Epoxy removal
I am trying to find out if there's an effective way to remove layers of epoxy paint from below the waterline without damaging the gelcoat. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Keel repair contractor
Hi, Could anyone recommend a yard in the Southwest that could drop, blast, epoxy the keels on my 1979/80 Konsort and also strengthen the keel stubb area ? Has anyone had this done recently and how much did it cost ? The quotes I've had so far have been quite different. She's currently on the Dart. T...

Re: Butyl Tape
Simon, Good question and I'm trying to find the answer myself. Not all butyl tapes are the same or have the same properties. Have a look at pbase.com Unfortunately this tape appears to be sold only in the US but it may be possible to get this particular product imported at a cost. There's also a com...

Re: Butyl Tape
I personally have never used it but there is quite a lot of info on the net. It appears to be used more on boats in the US. The properties I like are that its easy to use, you can tighten the fitting straight away, easy to clean up, remains flexible for decades and that it enables the fitting to be ...

Butyl Tape
I'm looking at removing all deck hardware this winter, replacing items as necessary then refitting. Has anyone used butyl tape instead of the more common sealants on the market to re-bed ? Butyl tape appears to have a number of advantages from the research I've done but would like to hear other opin...

Re: Konsort Chainplate
Hi Derek, Many thanks for your reply. The balsa core also concerns me. I wasn't sure whether the balsa core was all round the deck or everywhere apart from the deck fitting attachment areas. I don't want to start a job afloat with the mast up then run into more problems. I'll contact Trafalgar yacht...

Konsort Chainplate
Hi, Some rust streaks have appeared on the deck of my Konsort around the lower port shroud chainplate. Inside the fitting is wet with rusty gunk. Obviously there has been some sort of crevice corrosion due to the fitting leaking and I need to replace asap. My question is this has anyone done this wi...

Inflatable for a Konsort
I'm just in the process of buying a Konsort. I need to buy a new inflatable but am unsure of which size to get with regards to weight and ease of storage. I would preferably like a proper 4 man so therefore will be looking at at least a 2.9m one. I don't want to end up buying one and then find I don...

Berwick versus Konsort
I will shortly be in the position where I can look for my next Westerly. The problem I have is which model to go for. I've owned a couple of Centaurs in the past but now have two little ones so could do with something a little larger. The choice is now between the Berwick and Konsort, due budget and...

Re: Fulmar and Konsort Bilge Keels
I had a Centaur built in 1978 which had flexing keels. The solution was to remove them, thicken the laminate within the keel stub area and to add additional foam stringers. Price at the time (2001) was circa £1000 per keel by a professional boatyard. As far as I understand this problem could occur ...

Re: Westerly Centaur "Hellsbells"
Further information incase of name change. If I remember correctly she was a 1978/9 model. Full MD11C rebuild, keels removed and strengthened, re-rigged all done in 2001/2 at Retreat Boatyard, Topsham. When I sold her she was moved to Brixham where she was kept for about 3 years before being sold ag...

Westerly Centaur "Hellsbells"
I am trying to locate a Westerly Centaur called Hellsbells that I sold back in 2002. She was only sold due to redundancy. HB was a particularly fine example and would like to track her down again as I would be interested in buying her back if and when her current owner puts her up for sale. Unfortun...
